That the House of Representatives urge the Minister of Education to retain art history for year 12 and 13 students, retaining art history as a standalone-subject.
Petition reason
In my opinion no subject teaches about humanity like art history. As well as teaching visual interpretation and critical analysis skills necessary for the image-filled 21st century, I think art history allows you to see history not just from the victor's perspective, but from the victims, increasing empathy. I believe teaching this course within Visual Arts would exclude students who don’t take Visual Arts. To me, losing art history would be detrimental to Aotearoa’s vibrant cultural capital.
