Petition request

That the House of Representatives make coercive control a standalone criminal offence, drawing on legislative frameworks used in jurisdictions such as Scotland, England and Wales, and New South Wales.

Petition reason

Coercive control is a sustained pattern of psychological, emotional, financial, and other abusive behaviours that can erode a person's autonomy and sense of self without physical violence. I believe New Zealand law does not adequately recognise these patterns, leaving many victims without protection until the abuse escalates. I believe criminalising coercive control would enable earlier intervention, better reflect victims' lived experiences, and help prevent serious harm or loss of life.
