Petition request
That the House of Representatives inquire into the use of mechanical restraint in New Zealand, assessing whether there are sufficient safeguards to prevent misuse, particularly in relation to the threatened use of restraint as a form of coercion, intimidation, or behavioural control.
Petition reason
My concern applies not only within healthcare settings, but also across other public-facing professions, including law enforcement. I worry that individuals may be subjected to verbal threats of restraint—including references to highly restrictive devices such as straitjackets—in situations where there is no genuine threat or safety risk, no just cause for any such action. I feel such threats can have a coercive and intimidating effect, discouraging individuals from asserting their rights.
