Petition request
That the House of Representatives repeal the Prisoners’ and Victims’ Claims Act 2005.
Petition reason
I believe the Act undermines judicial integrity and state accountability. When courts rule the state breached human rights in custody, I think that the state must face full consequences, and that intercepting compensation lets governments bypass penalties meant to deter abuse. The Supreme Court case Taunoa v Attorney-General NZSC 70 highlighted issues with compensation in this area. I believe Parliament should fully repeal it to ensure human rights and equal accountability.
