Petition request

That the House of Representatives urge the Government to withdraw its plan to enable an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) import facility to be located and operational at Port Taranaki; and note that 1,769 people have signed a similar online petition.

Petition reason

We think the consequences of an LNG import facility in Port Taranaki could be catastrophic and are unacceptable to residents. We believe the process of shortlisting providers has been rushed and that potentially signing contracts close to an election and passing enabling legislation would be imprudent and undemocratic. Concept Consulting reported that the modelled need for LNG is low, even in scenarios with less other security resources. We feel there are alternatives to address 'dry-year risk’.
