Petition request
That the House of Representatives establish a national legislative framework requiring safe, suitable unsold food to be offered at a reduced price before closing, and any remaining food that is safe and suitable for human consumption to be donated or redistributed rather than disposed of.
Petition reason
New Zealand already has food-rescue initiatives to reduce food waste, yet we believe significant food loss remains. We consider safe, suitable unsold food should have every reasonable opportunity to feed people before disposal. We ask for a clear national legislative framework that prioritises human consumption while maintaining food-safety requirements. We seek legislation to establish a food-waste hierarchy: PREVENT → SELL/REDUCE → DONATE/REDISTRIBUTE → RECOVER → DISPOSE.
