That the House of Representatives pass legislation that repeals statutory references to the ‘principles of the Treaty of Waitangi’ and removes those principles as a source of statutory legal obligations and decision-making requirements.
Petition reason
We ask Parliament to remove Treaty principles and interpretations introduced to legislation since 1975. We believe that many changes extend beyond the original 1840 text of the Treaty of Waitangi. We think doing so would provide greater constitutional clarity, democratic accountability, and equal rights under one legal framework. We ask Parliament to review legislation containing Treaty principles interpretations and ensure laws use wording consistent with the original Treaty text.
