Petition request
That the House of Representatives amend the Land Transport Act 1998 to increase penalties for careless driving causing death that reflect the seriousness of a life lost, and recognise a wider range of aggravating circumstances for breaches of traffic rules, particularly involving heavy vehicles.
Petition reason
I believe NZ laws do not reflect the seriousness of preventable road deaths from road rule breaches. Jade’s Law seeks stronger accountability for phone use, failing to obey traffic signals, fatigue/licence condition breaches, unrestrained passengers, particularly when driving heavy vehicles. I think penalties should be longer where death results than injury. I feel this would reflect loss of life, deter offending, improve road safety & more closely align with comparable international penalties.
