Petition request

That the House of Representatives amend the Fair Trading Act 1986 to require automatically renewing or continuous subscriptions to be cancellable through the same medium used to subscribe, using a process that is at least as easy to access and use as signing up.

Petition reason

In my view, consumers should not face a harder process to cancel a subscription than to start one. New York law requires automatic-renewal services to provide cancellation that is as easy to use as to sign-up, and through the same medium. In NZ, a previous member’s bill, never drawn from the ballot, proposed a similar reform. I ask Parliament to introduce clear protections against unnecessary barriers to the cancellation of automatically renewing or continuous subscriptions.
