Petition request

That the House of Representatives codify and entrench the New Zealand Constitution.

Petition reason

New Zealand’s Constitution is spread over multiple documents and is largely uncodified. I feel it is fragmented and weakly protected. Core democratic safeguards, such as the NZ Bill of Rights Act 1990, can be altered by parliamentary majority, and Cabinet can change constitutional conventions in the Cabinet Manual. I believe codifying and entrenching the Constitution would protect democracy, fundamental rights, institutional checks and balances, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi for future generations.
