Start a petition

Before you lodge a petition on our website we require you to read and acknowledge that your petition meets the following conditions:

• Your petition asks Parliament to take a specific action.
  
  • Make sure your request clearly sets out what you would like Parliament to do.
    Good example: That the House of Representatives ban the sale of plastic straws.
    Bad example: That the House of Representatives thinks about some ways to clean up the ocean.
• Your petition is of serious intent, and the language used in your petition is respectful and moderate.
• You have explored other actions you could take and believe that your request is best considered by Parliament. Other actions you could take include:
  
  • writing to your local MP or a relevant Government department
  • petitioning your local council
  • making a complaint to a relevant organisation such as the Ombudsman, the Human Rights Commission, the Health and Disability Commissioner, or others.
• You can provide information, from a credible source, to support any statements in your petition; and your petition does not contain inaccurate or misleading statements.
• The subject matter you are petitioning about is not currently before a court or tribunal.
• You do not have statutory appeal rights available to you.
  
  • This does not mean you have to seek judicial review of a decision that you’re petitioning about. Your petition can still be accepted if you have not sought judicial review.
    Nor do you have to embark on speculative litigation before your petition can be accepted.
• The subject matter of your petition has not been suppressed by order of a New Zealand court.
• Your petition does not contain defamatory information or unfounded allegations.
• If you are petitioning on behalf of an organisation, you are authorised by that organisation to do so.

Your personal information (name, email address, contact phone number and organisation) is being collected so that we can communicate with you about your petition. It will be held by the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives located at the Parliament Buildings, Wellington. You have the right to request access to and correction of this information should you wish.

Your name will be published on the Parliament website in association with your petition.

Petitioners must provide contact information under the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives. If you choose not to provide this information, we will not be able to accept your petition. Your contact information will form part of the official record of the petition and will be disclosed to the select committee that considers the petition. It will not be published to the parliament website but may be made available in hard-copy for public inspection.
