Petition request

That the House of Representatives ban evidence of previous good character from consideration when sentencing sexual offenders.

Petition reason

We believe sentencing should be based on facts and the impact on survivors—not on personal character references. We urge that evidence of previous good character no longer be considered as a mitigating factor when sentencing sexual offenders. We believe that allowing such offenders to present testimonials from friends, colleagues, or community figures can unfairly influence sentencing and undermine the voices of survivors.
