Petition request
That the House of Representatives increase the minimum bereavement leave entitlement to ten days for the death of an immediate family member, including extended whānau and de facto relationship partners; and enable those who have suffered a bereavement to have a more flexible return to work.
Petition reason
In 2023, I lost my daughter Lauren in a sudden car accident. I was signed off with multiple grief trauma and was unable to work for many months. I was self-employed, but I think any employee in my position would have lost their job. To me, three days is barely funeral leave. I believe the law needs to catch up with what grief costs New Zealanders—medically, financially, and emotionally—and how long they really need to function safely in the workplace.
