Petition request

That the House of Representatives repeal any legislation, and urge the Government to halt any policy, that permits automated or AI-assisted systems to make, recommend, trigger, review, suspend, reduce, decline, or terminate welfare-related decisions.

Petition reason

In my view, New Zealanders should not have their income, housing, or wellbeing determined by algorithms. AI systems can be biased, make errors, and lack transparency. Australia's Robodebt scandal demonstrated the harm that can occur when automated systems are trusted over people. Welfare decisions affect vulnerable New Zealanders and I think should remain subject to human judgement, accountability, and appeal rights. I consider Parliament should protect ethics, fairness, dignity and due process.
