Petition request

That the House of Representatives urge the Government to pause the Emissions Trading Scheme for industry and remove the Emissions Trading Scheme for electricity generation.

Petition reason

New Zealand, responsible for just 0.17% of global emissions, faces declining gas reserves, high electricity prices, and the consequences of the 2018 fossil fuel exploration ban. I calculate that gas-dependent sectors contribute around 20% of GDP and 500,000 jobs. I consider that renewables cannot yet replace fossil fuels, leaving major supply gaps, and that the ETS should pause until affordable and reliable alternatives are available. I urge the Government to reconsider the ETS.
