Petition request
That the House of Representatives limit the use of urgency in Parliament, define what legislation can be passed under urgency, and put processes in place to ensure this happens such as requiring the approval of a supermajority of the House or placing a time limit on legislation passed under urgency.
Petition reason
Urgency is sometimes needed, as there are natural disasters and global events that require urgent action, but in my view, more and more often urgency seems to be used to quickly pass legislation that perhaps wouldn't stand up to normal parliamentary process, skipping public feedback and thorough scrutiny. I ask that clear criteria for the use of urgency be established and measures be put in place to limit the use of urgency to matters truly urgent to the nation.
