That the House of Representatives request the Minister of Health to designate Motor Neurone Disease a 'Notifiable Disease', which means that upon diagnosis a health practitioner must report it to the Medical Officer of Health.
Petition reason
NZ has one of the highest incidence rates of MND in the world, with higher rates in occupations such as farming/agriculture (Chen et al. 2019), but MND is still not designated a 'Notifiable Disease'. I believe this means that a great deal of data regarding environment, possible risk factors, occupation and location are not collected and analysed. In my view, this information is vital in understanding the illness and potentially finding a cure, and we must act now to prevent MND from escalating.
