Petition request

That the House of Representatives amend the Crimes Act 1961 to provide that a person under the age of 18 cannot legally consent to sexual activity with an adult who holds a position of authority or trust over them.

Petition reason

I believe New Zealand law fails to protect 16- and 17-year-old children from sexual exploitation by adults in positions of authority, which I feel leaves them vulnerable to abuse by teachers, coaches, caregivers, and others entrusted with their care. In my opinion, the law does not address the power imbalances and risk of coercion. I believe amending the Crimes Act 1961 to provide that under-18-year-olds could not give consent to sexual activity in these situations would provide protection
