Petition request

That the House of Representatives implement a capital gains tax on residential property in New Zealand.

Petition reason

The increase in house prices has meant housing speculation is extremely profitable. I feel this income is rarely taxed, and results in a lack of equity in the taxation system. Speculation in an unproductive investment is incentivised. I believe that a capital gains tax would allow changes to other parts of the taxation system to reduce the tax burden of those areas. Almost every other country in the OECD has a capital gains tax, and it is time we join the norm.
