That the House of Representatives require that claims of fact made in public political communications are materially accurate, and establish an independent process for evaluating claims of fact and requiring the correction or withdrawal of materially false or misleading claims of fact.
Petition reason
I believe New Zealanders deserve political debate based on accurate information. Current laws do not provide an independent process for addressing materially false or misleading factual claims made in political communications. Other democracies, including South Australia, Ireland, and Wales, have introduced or considered safeguards in this area. We ask Parliament to create a fair, independent standard requiring factual accuracy while protecting opinions and legitimate debate.
