Petition request

That the House of Representatives not repeal the Animal Welfare Amendment Act 2022, which amended the Animal Welfare Act 1999 to ban the export of livestock by sea.

Petition reason

I believe our export ban is world-leading. It was heavily supported by submissions and the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee. In my view, reversing this legislation, as proposed by the coalition agreement, would disregard public sentiment, condemn animals to suffering during shipment and at destinations, throw away years of progress, and harm NZ’s international reputation. It would also be the first time to my knowledge that NZ legislates to reduce rather than enhance animal welfare.
