Petition request
That the House of Representatives urge the Government to reduce New Zealand’s Refugee Quota from 1,500 to 750 per year, and require any future increase to follow public consultation and a full assessment of housing, health, infrastructure, social cohesion, and national security capacity.
Petition reason
New Zealand’s Refugee Quota was 750 places for years, then rose to 1,000 and 1,500. I do not believe there was enough public mandate for permanently doubling the long-standing level. Public reporting said the increase from 1,000 to 1,500 alone would cost over $180m over five years. I think housing, hospitals, infrastructure, and workforce training are under pressure, so I suggest NZ should prioritise citizens and residents first and return the quota to 750.
