That the House of Representatives require independent Healthy Homes certification and regular compliance audits for rental properties.
Petition reason
In New Zealand too many people live in cold, damp, mouldy rental homes despite Healthy Homes Standards. Poor housing contributes to respiratory illness, missed school and employment, increased health costs for taxpayers and reduced wellbeing. The current system uses landlord self-compliance with limited auditing. We call for independent certification and regular compliance checks. We believe this would strengthen enforcement, and improve accountability, and ensure access to healthy homes.
