That the House of Representatives introduce licensing and oversight for debt collection and credit reporting agencies, require independent verification of debts before credit reporting, and strengthen regulation and accountability of credit reporting agencies.
Petition reason
I consider that debt collection agencies are a source of consumer harm in New Zealand, including pressure tactics, disputed or inaccurate debts, and limited effective oversight. Compared to other sectors with significant power over individuals, I feel they have fewer licensing, verification, or accountability standards. In my view, strengthening oversight and requiring independent verification would address these gaps and prevent unfair or incorrect harm from unverified financial information.
