Petition request
That the House of Representatives urge the Government to revise Refugee Status Unit procedures so standard onshore asylum claimants can seek allocation to a Refugee and Protection Officer ahead of the usual queue, without needing exceptional circumstances, while keeping existing priority categories.
Petition reason
INZ operates a queue-based process for considering the status of asylum claimants, except for some prioritised cases. In my view, standard claimants should be able to request earlier RPO allocation without exceptional circumstances. A Parliamentary paper outlining proposed policy additions for the Immigration (Enhanced Risk Management) Amendment Bill identified a backlog and sought quicker handling of some claims. I believe an earlier allocation request would support that goal.
