Petition request
That the House of Representatives ban the export of plastic waste to developing countries; and note that over 11,000 people have signed an Action Station petition with this request.
Petition reason
Large volumes of our exported plastics are being burned or dumped in recipient countries like Malaysia instead of being recycled - causing an environmental and health problem (see Greenpeace NZ report dated 9 August 2021). I believe that by banning waste exports New Zealand will transition more quickly to a safer, circular economy in which plastics are minimised.
