Petition request

That the House of Representatives pass legislation requiring all commercial and municipal wastewater treatment facilities to comprehensively filter out microplastics before discharge.

Petition reason

Microplastics contaminate our waterways, can harm wildlife, and can threaten kaimoana safety and public health. Current NZ wastewater systems are not legally required or equipped to filter out synthetic fibres and plastic particles. I believe that to protect our marine and freshwater ecosystems for future generations, we need mandatory filtration standards alongside tighter environmental licensing, and clear legal accountability for commercial and municipal water operators.
