Petition request

That the House of Representatives ban all forms of mobile bottom-contact fishing including bottom trawling, scallop dredging, and Danish seining in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park; and note that 36,589 people have signed four similar online petitions to this effect.

Petition reason

We believe that the Hauraki Gulf is in crisis. There are widespread kina barrens, significant habitat loss, overfishing is occurring, fish stocks are low, and shellfish beds have been decimated. Bottom contact fishing methods, such as bottom trawling and scallop dredging are a leading cause of this degradation. We believe it is time to protect the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park and allow its marine ecosystem to recover.
