Petition request

That the House of Representatives passes legislation prohibiting the import and sale of foie gras.

Petition reason

I believe it is unacceptable to import animal products obtained using practices that are likely to be prohibited in NZ. Foie gras is produced by force-feeding ducks and geese a fatty substance through a metal tube inserted into their throat. Birds can die prematurely and, if they live long enough to be slaughtered, their livers may be enlarged up to ten times the normal size. I believe importing and selling this product undermines and is inconsistent with the spirit of the Animal Welfare Act.
