That the House of Representatives establish a Commissioner for Animals, which reviews the animal welfare system, including regulations; reports on the latest animal welfare science; and provides independent oversight and accountability for animal welfare; and note that 31,565 people have signed a similar online petition.
Petition reason
We believe that decisions on animal welfare should be overseen by an independent representative who can provide fair and impartial advice for the care and welfare of New Zealand’s animals. We believe that, under the current system, the pursuit of profit and productivity can override the legal protections provided for animals under the Animal Welfare Act 1999. We believe that animal welfare policy should be informed by scientific best practice and the values and expectations of society.
