Petition request

That the House of Representatives require holders of licensed premises to display warning signs at their entrances and within to alert pregnant women of their risk of a FASD baby if they drink alcohol.

Petition reason

Alcohol consumption when pregnant can cause lifelong harm to unborn babies called FASD (Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder). NZ's Ministry of Health estimates 1,800-3,000 FASD babies are born each year. In April 2024 the Minister of Health promised to increase awareness and decrease incidence of FASD. I believe that alerting pregnant women, their partners and supporters of this risk to their babies, at point of entry and inside liquor outlets, could reduce, at low cost, the number born every day.
