Petition request
That the House of Representatives amend relevant electoral legislation to restrict general election voting to New Zealand citizens while retaining eligible non-citizen residents' voting rights in local elections.
Petition reason
General elections ultimately determine New Zealand’s national Government and laws. I believe restricting general election voting to citizens would strengthen the link between national political rights and citizenship, and reduce the potential for foreign governments or overseas political organisations to influence New Zealand elections through non-citizen voters. I think that eligible non-citizen residents should retain local voting rights.
