Petition request

That the House of Representatives introduce an annual immigration cap on all resident and temporary visas of no more than 0.5% of the population, cap temporary visas at 12 months, and require that all applications to renew visas are made from outside NZ.

Petition reason

In my view, NZ has immigration levels that outpace housing, infrastructure, and public-service capacity, intensify rental competition, weaken incentives for businesses to train and retain NZ citizens, and undermine social cohesion. I consider a statutory cap is needed to prevent limits from being circumvented through discretionary exemptions or administrative reclassification. I would like to see governments grow the economy through innovation and increased productivity instead of consumption.
