Petition request
That the House of Representatives amend the Immigration (Enhanced Risk Management) Amendment Bill to keep humanitarian appeals and remove bad-faith rules; and urge the Government to boost onshore asylum funding and track the safety of asylum-seekers returned to their home countries.
Petition reason
Onshore asylum-processing costs are below onshore refugee quota-programme costs at the Māngere Refugee Centre, which brings refugees from overseas. INZ does not track safety of asylum returns. I consider this gap and the bill risk breaching refugee/human rights law. I believe the bill's bad-faith rules could unfairly block refugee status at both the first decision and appeal stages. I think we should judge by contribution to NZ, not birthplace, and put international law before efficiency.
