Petition request
That the House of Representatives implement legislative and policy reforms to: recognise that adequate food is a fundamental human right; increase accessibility to nourishment and food security by food waste minimisation; enable and protect growth of safe food; and promote self-determination in food-insecure communities.
Petition reason
When ratifying the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in 1978, New Zealand undertook to take steps to realise the rights set out in that covenant, including: ensuring adequate food (Article 11); the highest attainable standard of health (Article 12); and protection and assistance to the family (Article 10). Despite this almost 1 in 5 children were reported to live in a food-insecure household, and women, Māori and Pasifika have particularly high food insecurity rates.
