Petition request

That the House of Representatives urge the Government to thoroughly inspect and survey the wreck of the RMS Niagara in the Hauraki Gulf for any oil that should be removed from it.

Petition reason

Room 3 at Northcote Intermediate has been investigating the RMS Niagara and was appalled to discover that the vessel in the Hauraki Gulf is not only leaking oil but may contain up to 1600 tonnes of heavy fuel oil. The wreck has been on the seafloor since 1940. We believe the Government must act quickly to survey the ship and if necessary remove the oil before it harms wildlife and destroys beaches. We believe it is the right thing to do for future generations and the future of the Gulf.
