Petition request

That the House of Representatives urge the Government to fully ban all shark finning and shark fishing in Aotearoa.

Petition reason

According to the Fisheries (Commercial Fishing) Regulations 2001, fishers can land certain species of shark without their fins if they follow rules, like the fin-to-greenweight ratio for mako sharks, porbeagle sharks, rig sharks, and school sharks; and blue sharks can be landed with their fins sewed or tied back on. Sharks are vital for ocean health—they help keep coral reefs alive and balance the food chain.
