That the House of Representatives urge the Government to work with commercial Māori kai producers, hapū and iwi to develop tikanga Māori-led food safety systems for commercial kai production.
Petition reason
MPI recognises tikanga Māori in guidance for customary marae kai preparation, while commercial kai sales are subject to a different regulatory framework. We seek a pathway where tikanga and mātauranga Māori meaningfully inform the development, governance and assessment of commercial food safety systems. We believe that appropriate public health protections must remain, while barriers affecting small and rural Māori kai producers are examined.
